King Philip Marching Band 2nd Place at National Competition!
On November 11th the King Philip Marching band traveled to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to compete in the US Bands National Division IV Open Class Marching Band Competition! They placed 2nd in their Division out of 16 with a score of 97.100 (their highest score of the season) and won the Best Music caption award! The title of this years show was "All the Kings Men", an exciting chess themed show featuring music from Stravinsky's, "The Right of Spring" and Edward Elgar's "Nimrod". The show included large chess pieces that were moved around the field to represent a chess game being played. The music conveyed the tension of the game as the pieces as well as the band and color guard moved around the field. The show ended with the queen of the losing opponent falling in defeat accompanied by a trumpet solo. This second place win was very exciting for the band as they moved up a division this year from Division III to Division IV. The bands in this Division are larger than KP has competed against in recent years, which offered some tough competition for the band. Because of the band members dedication, hard work and commitment to the Marching Band program, they were able to bring home this 2nd place win against many great bands! This year's band included over 20, 8th grade students, this was their first time traveling to Nationals! The band also featured a larger color guard than in past years, they doubled in size from 2016 to 2017! In addition to all the new members, the band will also be saying goodbye to several seniors this year as well. Many of these students have been part of the program for the past 5 years and will be greatly missed. Graduating seniors this year are: Drum Majors, Olivia Olsen and Phil Kaelbling also Kieran Bannon, Paris DeCosta-Calzaretta, Sean Desrochers,Collin Glaser, Elizabeth Hall, Dan Hedberg, Nate Holmes, Bethany Murphy, Madyson Ricci, Alec O'Rourke and Connor O'Rourke. The show will be performed one last time at halftime for the Thanksgiving day game. Marching band will resume in the spring with "spring training" and opportunity for interested musicians and dancers (for color guard) to come and check out the program and see what it's like.
